Retail therapy with Sidewalk Days

An annual Bay City tradition is returning once again this summer in Bay City. Sidewalk Days is slated to return on July 20, 21 and 22. Shops across downtown will be moving their wares to the sidewalk for customers to browse while enjoying the summertime weather.

The following businesses are participating this year: Believe Inspire Beauty Boutique, First Look Bridal Boutique, G.T. Homestead, Herman Hiss & Co, Herter Music Center, Little House MeadowCreek Clothiers, Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio, My Secret Garden, Nelsen & Co., Panache Boutique, Saginaw Bay Trading Company, SoCal Threads Boutique, Super Chic Designs/Table, The Vintage Greenhouse, Uptown Girl, Urban East Footwear, and Violets Blue.

There will also be pop-ups by various local vendors along Saginaw Street for customers to enjoy.

Professional fishing

The National Professional Fishing League picked the Saginaw Bay as the fourth stop for its 2023 season, bringing high-level fishers in to enjoy all that the bay has to offer.

The tournament started with practice rounds on Sunday, July 16, which will continue until the big competition kicks off Thursday, July 20. The competition portion of the tournament will run through Saturday, July 22.

During the competition, anglers will launch from Veterans Memorial Park in the morning and return to Wenonah Park at about 3 p.m. daily for live weigh-ins.

All weigh-ins will be live-streamed, and in-person attendance is permitted in Wenonah Park. Live streams can be found on The National Professional Fishing League’s website.

Arena rock and musical mummies

There are two Rockin’ the River concerts set for this weekend at the Wenonah Park Bandshell. 38 Special will perform Friday, and Here Come the Mummies will take the stage on Saturday.

38 Special is a rock band popular for its arena rock pop hits such as “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’” and “Second Chance.” They will be joined by special guest ADABOY, a Bay City-based band.

Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band that puts on a theatrical performance dressed as mummies, as its name suggests. The show will also feature special guest Saxsquatch, a saxophonist who dons a bigfoot costume while playing cover versions of popular songs.

Unwind with free yoga

A free slow-flow yoga session by Linda Petee Yoga & Mindfulness is taking place this weekend in downtown Bay City as a part of this year’s Feet on the Street programming. This year, organizers added a wellness-focused angle to Feet on the Street, making the seasonal road closures more than just a typical outdoor dining experience.

Yoga will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday downtown on the artificial turf next to Ocean Jasper Wellness at 806 Saginaw St. Sessions will also take place at 10 a.m. on July 30, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20 at the same location.

Meet the pros

While over 75 pro fishermen will be busy on the water looking for tournament-winning bass, some outdoorsmen are taking some special time to share their passion for the outdoors and the water with kids.

On Saturday, local pros Rex Robinette, Jim Fortner and Ron Almasy will be at Graff Chevrolet in Bay City, 3636 Wilder Road, for a “Meet the Pros” event. The pros will be giving fishing and boaters safety tips.

The event is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Children will receive a free fishing rod and gift bag, while supplies last. Free Andy’s Seasoning will be given away as well.

Kids will get to explore a tournament fishing boat as well as climb aboard an airboat from T.K. & Son Ice Recovery. Graff Bay City Chevrolet and Frank’s Great Outdoors are hosting the event.
